SWEET HEREAFTER CHEESECAKERY: Five decadent slices to indulge in this fall
A lush, gold, tufted velvet banquette soars from the floor almost to the ceiling in the middle of Sweet Hereafter, while hot pink damask wallpaper, black floors and a black ceiling add drama and contrast to the space’s opulent softness. “Overall, we like to think of it as an atmosphere of relaxed elegance,” says owner Colin MacDougall. Colin, along with his co-owner and wife, Joanne MacDougall, celebrated Sweet Hereafter’s sixth anniversary in September. The cheesecakery, located on Quinpool Road, bakes decadent, full-bodied, super-rich cheesecake on the daily, and is known to be an exquisite choice for a slice of heavenly artisanal cheesecake after dinner, a movie or for absolutely no reason at all.
“We started doing cheesecake because no one was doing it at the time,” says Colin. “We wanted to open our own restaurant and we looked at the city and asked ourselves, ‘What’s missing?’” Well, very clearly, a s’mores cheesecake was missing. With a graham-chocolate crust, dark chocolate cheesecake filling, marshmallow topping, graham crumbs and chocolate pieces, Sweet Hereafter’s s’mores cheesecake is what my dreams are made of.
PEANUT BUTTER CHOCOLATE
“I’d say this is one of our signature cakes that seems to get most people’s attention,” says Colin. “We almost always have this one, where the rest change more often.” Graham crumbs and chocolate crumbs are blended to create the crust, and then it’s topped with a layer of peanut butter. Yes, you read that correctly. THE CRUST IS TOPPED WITH A LAYER OF PEANUT BUTTER. Vanilla cheesecake batter is poured into the crust with a bit of chocolate cheesecake marbled into the top, then it’s all covered with milk chocolate ganache and tiny peanut butter cups. Decadence at its finest.
When I ask why they focus on cheesecake and nothing else, Colin tells me, “You can do so much with cheesecake. It’s so versatile and you’re not limited like you are with pie. You know there are only so many kinds of pies you can make, there are only so many kinds of croissants, but when you get into cheesecake, there are just so many options.” Blueberry shortcake cheesecake, with its buttery shortbread crust, blueberry-infused cheesecake and thin layer of cream-cheese icing, is just one of Sweet Hereafter’s 140 flavours created over the last six years. I’d say it’s a damn fine option.
WHITE CHOCOLATE RASPBERRY
If shortbread crust, white chocolate cheesecake and homemade raspberry coulis are your thing, then you’re definitely going to want to order Sweet Hereafter’s white chocolate raspberry cheesecake. Paired with a cup of hot, fresh Laughing Whale coffee or organic, fair trade tea from World Tea House, it’s practically a match made in heaven. Too cheesy?
Chocolate coconut crust. Milk chocolate cheesecake with essence of coconut and shaved coconut. Milk chocolate ganache topping and more shaved coconut on top. Think of the richest, indulgent chocolate coconut dessert you’ve ever had and then multiply it by four. Sweet Hereafter’s chocolate macaroon cheesecake is a quadruple coconut threat and I couldn’t be happier about that.
